Hello there. Welcome to Ink Inquiring Minds. My name is Doug, and I'm back with another pen resurrection Sunday video. The very dead fountain pen on the slab today. Ready for resurrection to the land of the writing is this 1937 Parker Vacumatic Slender Lockdown Burgundy Pearl Celluloid fountain pen.
That's a lot of names for this first-generation Vacumatic. And this is in one of the most beautiful, in my opinion, colours of stack celluloid that Parker ever made. They only made them for a brief number of years before they discontinued the colour.
So, what are my thoughts on this resurrection? Well, I’m thrilled about it! I was equally excited when I first acquired this burgundy pearl first-generation Parker Vacumatic. As you know, I adore these first-generation Parker Vacumatics, and I’d keep this one if it weren’t so slender and small. It measures about 4 and 3/4 inches, capped and slender in the hand. Despite its size, it’s a gorgeous writer, well-balanced, restored perfectly, and equipped with a brand-new diaphragm. It writes wonderfully.
What I love about the first generation is the matching acrylic sections and finials, which were essentially the perfect Parker pen until they started making economies in the second and third generations. I’m keeping an eye out for a first-generation burgundy pearl full-size Vacumatic to restore and keep for myself because I think my third-generation Azure blue needs a partner. I’m torn between whether the azure blue pearl or this burgundy pearl is my favourite. Look at that pearlescence! Isn’t it amazing?
The burgundy pearl is also a bit rarer than the other colours because they discontinued them after 1937. It perfectly matches Murray’s 1932 wool Eversharp Doric in Morocco Pearl, but it’s the same burgundy pearl, just in a different pattern. Of course, the Doric has all these wonderful facets. Murray’s actually authorized me to reduce the price of this pen, so it’s now selling for $580 US. Check out my Wix site for more information on this pen, and you can click right up there for the restoration video.
As for this burgundy pearl, I’m letting it go for only $260 US. Members among you will get discounts on this. Basic members will get 10% off, and patrons at the $5 a month level will get 20% off. I’m considering whether this price point might deter some buyers, potentially allowing me to keep it. We’ll see. However, if I do sell it, the proceeds could fund my search for a full-size burgundy pearl to restore. I simply adore this pen.
