THIS PEN SET HAS SOLD!
Hello there. Welcome to my channel. My name is Doug, and I'm back with another pen resurrection Sunday video.
The dead pen ready for resurrection today is a Skywriter by Waterman, housed in its original box. I recently acquired this fountain pen and pencil set at an antique store. It’s not just a fountain pen; it’s a beautiful amber celluloid set. Although it may not be immediately apparent from the scale, this pen is relatively short. For comparison, here’s an Estherbrook H, very similar to the Esterbrook J fountain pen. You can see how much larger it is than this small Skyrider.
My research reveals that the Skywriter was a limited, medium-priced celluloid pen produced by the Alco division of Waterman. Alco stood for the Aiken Lambert Company, a jewelry and pen maker based in New York City. In the early 1930s, the brand was acquired by Waterman. This particular pen appears to date from around 1936.
We can observe some engravings on the clip that were absent in the Waterman 1937 catalog but appeared in the 1936 catalog. Interestingly, this pen was manufactured in Canada. The imprint on the pen reads, “Skywriter in quotes, manufactured in Canada by the Alco division, LE Waterman Company Limited.” This would be located in Montreal, although the factory was actually situated in St. Lambert, near Montreal.
THOUGHTS
So what are my thoughts about this resurrection? Well, this turned out better than I could have hoped, with one exception. That exception is the pressure bar inside this pen. Unfortunately, the spring end of the pressure bar had broken off. The good news is that the pressure bar itself is in excellent shape, and the pen fills with ink perfectly. I’ve restored the pen completely, and it works flawlessly. The oversized sack holds the pressure bar in place, but there’s no guarantee that a sharp knock won’t make it slide to the side.
I was going to sell this pen and pencil set for $100 US plus shipping. However, if you’re interested in buying this set with a newly replaced J-bar, you’ll need to indicate your willingness to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive from pentooling.com. The bar itself is just $5 US, but with shipping, it will be $25 US. As is, it’s $100 US. With a new Jbar, it will be $125 US plus shipping.
Shipping to the US has doubled recently due to added tariffs, administrative fees, and extra fees to take advantage of the tariffs for profit. It used to cost about $10 to ship to the US, but now it’s $20 US. Shipping to other countries is still around $10 US.
If you’re interested, I also have this completely restored Esterbrook H lever filler in gorgeous green celluloid with a steel Esterbrook 2048 cursive metallic nib. It’s available for $80 US plus shipping.
If you’re interested in either of these restored pens, send me an email at inkquiringminds@gmail.com with your name and address so I can get you a shipping quote and provide instructions on how to pay via PayPal.
