THIS PEN AND PENCIL SET HAS SOLD
Hello there. Welcome to Inkquiring Minds. My name is Doug, and I'm back with another pen resurrection Sunday video.
Today’s vintage fountain pen on the slab, ready for a resurrection to the world of the writing, is in this box. Inside, it contains a vintage Sheaffer Balance pen and pencil set from the 1930s. This is the Sheaffer Balance 875. The “875” isn’t the model name; it was the price printed directly into the pen’s barrel. It stood for $8.75, circa mid-1930s. The Sheaffer Balance 500 was a $5 pen, and the Sheaffer Balance 1000 was a $10 pen. You see how it works.
The difference between the Sheaffer Balance 500, which I recently restored, and the 875 is that the 500 lacked the white dot, indicating a Sheaffer lifetime warranty. The nib on the 500 was a Feather-Touch nib, unlike the "Lifetime" nib on this pen.
The original box is in rough shape, with lots of old rust and other wear. I’ll try to clean it out, along with the leather on the outside of the metal case. However, I’ll focus on restoring the pen and pencil so they can write again.
THOUGHTS
So, what are my thoughts on this pen resurrection? You saw it here, folks. That clip looked really awful. There’s still some pitting because the corrosion went deep into the metal, but you have to get close to see it. The cap end also had very little brassing, just barely on the edge.
Now, this is a beautiful-looking fountain pen. The celluloid golden brown stripe is gorgeous. The imprint is still very prominent. The lever filler works beautifully, and the nib is a fine 14-karat gold nib. It’s very stiff, so if you’re looking for vintage flex, this isn’t the nib for you. However, it’s a beautiful, smooth, and wet fine writer with a beautiful two-tone nib, a polished-up ebonite feed, and an ink view window. The pen posts beautifully and writes beautifully. The pencil came out wonderfully. There’s no pitting on the clip, the cap band is perfect, and there’s a nice, strong imprint on the back of the pencil. It takes 0.9 mm leads and works perfectly.
I was very pleased with how the vintage case came up. I just cleaned off a bunch of grime and put some Armour-All on it. It looks great. The inside is 90 years old, but we have the original box.
So, there you have it. A restored Sheaffer Balance Pen and Pencil Set 875 lever-filling fountain pen in the original box. I’m going to sell this pen for $200 US plus shipping. If you’re a member of my channel, you get a discount. Basic members at $99 a month will only pay $180 for this pen. Patron members at $5 a month will get this pen and pencil set for $160, which is a bargain indeed.
Before we go, I wanted to show you the difference between a full-size Sheaffer Balance and a Slimline full-size Sheaffer Balance.
These two pens are the same length, but the green one below is the full-thickness version. This is known as the full-size slender shaver balance. I recently received this one in the mail and wanted to share it with you. You’ll see it on a future Pen Resurrection Sunday. It’s not a lever filler, but it’s a 500 balance with a vacuum filler, which makes it a bit crunchy. This resurrection is a bit more involved, but we still get the beautiful two-tone 14 karat gold nib, a feather-touch nib. This shows the difference between a resurrected pen and an unresurrected one.
