Hello there and welcome to Inkquiring Minds my name is Doug and I'm back with another Pen Resurrection Sunday video. This is a doubleheader today because I have Sheaffer and I have Parker. The reason I'm doing a doubleheader is because I believe both of these pens are going to be simple to restore. Now I'm just assuming that they're going to be simple and you know what they say about assuming; I just make an ass of myself. That's all. But I'm sure you enjoy that.
So we're going to take a look at each one of these pens. They both come in their original boxes. This one's newer than this one so let's take a look at the Sheaffer first and then I'll show you this lovely Parker 51 set.
SHEAFFER PRELUDE
I picked this Sheaffer up at an antique shop in my local area. It's a Schaefer white dot. Let's open it up. Original case and the case says Sheaffer Prelude and that's what this is. This is a Sheaffer Prelude from 19, in fact, the date is on it because this one is engraved. It's engraved to Fred Gallani who got his MBA in 1998.
So this was new in 1998; possibly made in 1997. So I'm not sure that it classifies as a vintage pen yet because it's only 27 years old. I'm not sure what the cut-off is for vintage but it's certainly a beautiful pen. It's gold-plated I believe and it has a lovely pearlescent jewel on the top, the Sheaffer white dot split clip.
It says Sheaffer USA on the cap band it has some wear on it for being 27 years old. But it's been in the box mostly for those 27 years. I don't think Fred Gallani was a fountain pen fan or he would have kept this pen.
It's a pull cap and we see a plastic section on the Prelude with some facets on the side with lines on them for grip. The plastic section is fairly soft black plastic and it could stand a little bit of polishing. It seems to be in good shape and there's that interesting shaped nib.
Here is a Parker 51 set in this beautiful burgundy original case. I picked this up at an antique shop north of the city. It's a black and Lustraloy pen and pencil set. It looks like a pen and pencil set. I'll get to that in a moment. This is a Parker 51 aerometric I'm guessing that it's from the 1950s, it could be up to 1960.
The cool thing about this pen and the tag confirmed it when I bought it. It said this has "fountain pen and ball pen set which is isn't what it is original box refills dried out pen has never been used."
This is a New Old Stock pen and it certainly looks it. It's got a little bit of handling wear on it but everything's in perfect shape.
THOUGHTS
There was dried-up ink in the Sheaffer but not enough for it to have been used extensively. If Mr. Gallani was in his mid to late 20s when he received his MBA in 1998 he'd be in his 50s today. I don't expect that this was part of an estate sale. Perhaps he just gave it up regardless. Now it's a lovely writer.
The Parker 51 Aerometric set is unique. Not only is it New Old Stock, but it's also a relatively rare combination of an Aerometric fountain pen and a Parker liquid lead pencil.
